Eleven weeks into the 2013 NFL season, the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks have solidified themselves as two of the top teams in the league. Currently sitting No. 1 and 2 overall in the NFC, the two clubs hold a combined record of 19-3 as they prepare for a major Monday night showdown. The Seahawks are riding a six-game win streak heading into the Week 12 match-up at CenturyLink Field while their opponents currently hold a streak of three-straight wins. Set to take on a Saints passing attack led by quarterback Drew Brees, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll hopes his banged up secondary is able to control a passing attack that ranks second in yards through the air.
"We're still trying to work through it," Carroll said regarding the injuries to his secondary that includes the loss of cornerback Brandon Browner. "I'll say it again, I've always found myself looking for guys that maybe other people don't see something special in and we take a chance on a guy here or there that needs some extra consideration and care. And sometimes guys they have issues and things pop up but I've always been kind of hopeful and make guys find the best in them and bring it out. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't."
The Seahawks (10-1) currently hold the top passing defense in the league, allowing just over 180 yards to opponents but with significant injury in the defensive backfield, Drew Brees and his array of talent could have a big evening against the NFC's top team. Tight end Jimmy Graham leads the Saints (9-2) in catches and yards with 65 and 946 respectively. Finding the end zone 11 times as well, Graham remains one of the toughest weapons in the league and head coach Sean Payton hopes his abilities to get open will propel New Orleans to a win and the top spot in the conference heading into Week 13. Despite the level of importance, Payton says his team's itinerary and plan remains unchanged.
"Every week we prepare as if that type of game is of that same magnitude," Payton said in his weekly press conference. "In other words, it's the next challenge and certainly it's a big challenge. It's not like you do additional this or that. Guys are working late, players are practicing, studying, and preparing just like we did on a short week last week, just like we did the week before last week before Dallas. That's just the nature of the work week and the schedule. We feel like we've got a pretty good itinerary. This one was a little unique in that it fell after a Thursday game and then Thanksgiving week and then Monday Night Football.
Meeting for the first time since Seattle took down New Orleans in the 2010 NFC Wild Card Playoffs, this match-up could prove to be one of the best games all season since there is plenty on the line for both sides.
