For months, the future of “Sherlock” Season 5 has been up in the air. BBC has been mum as to whether it will renew the series or not, and fans can’t help but think that their beloved series will no longer return for another season. If Benedict Cumberbatch’s previous statement is anything to go by, however, it looks like “Sherlock” Season 5 is not far from happening.

The Season 4 finale of “Sherlock” was met with generally negative reviews. Both fans and critics were not happy about the turn of events in the final episode of the last season, and many believe that this alone warrants the non-renewal of the series. However, there are still a lot of people who believe that “Sherlock” deserves another chance, including Sherlock himself.

In a previous interview, Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, said that he would love to reprise his role in Season 5. Although he said “Sherlock” is not returning anytime soon, he said that it doesn’t mean that it has already reached its end.

“No time soon,” he said. “Don’t hold your breath, but you never say never. But no time soon. Never say never — that’s what we always say on that show — but we’re all busy getting a kick out of doing other things, and that’s not to say it’s reached its end. It just means not right now,” he continued. The “Sherlock” star also teased that he would never give up on his character, saying that “nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock.”

Cumberbatch is not the only one interested to give “Sherlock” another shot. Series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have also expressed their interest to push through with Season 5, but they can’t work on the project at the moment because they’re both still working on the “Dracula” series.

Meanwhile, series regular Amanda Abbington previously expressed her hopes that Season 5 would not adopt the fan-service approach of last season, which, she said, was the reason that the fourth season of “Sherlock” did not receive a lot of support. “I love Steven Moffat, but I think they started to pander to the fans, involving lots of the fandom stuff,” she said. “I thought, ‘You should just stick to the stories because they’re much more interesting,’” she added.

Right now, the series regulars of “Sherlock” are all busy with their respective projects, so fans cannot expect “Sherlock” Season 5 to be in production soon. Before it gets underway, BBC will have to make an official announcement on the renewal of the series.
