An 18-year-old college student ended his life by jumping off his 12 story hostel building after leaving behind a suicide note apologizing to his sisters for being rude to them, authorities said.
The teen, Shiva Nagu, was found dead on the premises of VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology campus hostel at Bachupally, near Hyderabad, India on Thursday morning, Dec. 23.
According to Bachupally Police Sub Inspector Shiva Shankar, Nagu jumped from the terrace of his 12-story college hostel building. He suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the death, the police registered a case of unnatural death and began investigating. The investigators obtained CCTV footage in which Nagu is seen leaving his hostel room alone at around 6.30 am on Thursday.
During a search, the police recovered a suicide note and a cell phone from his hostel room.
“I am sorry sisters for being rude to you on several occasions. Love you, Mom. Love you, Dad,” the suicide note reportedly read.
In the note, Nagu also mentioned that this wasn’t the first time he had considered ending his life.
Experts at the Forensic Scientific Laboratory are examining the suicide note to identify whether it was written by the now-deceased teen, a police source said, according to local media.
A case has been registered under Section 174 (Enquire and report on Suicide) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
The death gave way to a massive outrage as student union members and the victim’s family members staged a protest outside the college accusing the management of abetting the suicide.
The mob alleges Nagu ended his life due to repeated harassment and extreme pressure from the college management.
The police tried to pacify the crowd but not to avail. They had to call in additional forces and had to resort to a lathi-charge to control the situation, reports said.
“We are yet to ascertain the exact reason for his suicide,” Shanker said.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were revealed at the time of this writing.
