MIAMI - "Don't watch the TikToks. Listen to the album," says Pablo Alborán, laughing his head off after two hours of interviews in which he was asked not only about his new album KM0 and his acting debut in the second season of Respira on Netflix, but also about his talents as a content creator and even as a dancer on social media.
The Spanish artist recently released his seventh album, one with several missions, among them, and perhaps the most important, is to promote bone marrow donation. That's why the main photo shows him dressed in red and white: blood and bone. It also features the most vulnerable songs from this Spanish artist, who often pours his soul into his music and his life into his voice.
But it's also a kind of diary about the previous two years of her life. "The whole album has been like a rollercoaster," she told me in an interview at Warner Music Latina's headquarters in Miami. "It has a song called 'Me Quedo,' another one that says 'Vámonos de Aquí.' It has songs that are very deep and others that aren't, where I completely curse the drama and say, 'Enough already with constantly ruining our lives because of heartbreak.' It can't be, it sucks, but heartbreak can also make you see things differently."
"In short, it's an album that encompasses all those processes, and musically that translates to a salsa, a merengue, a deep bulería, a bolero, a ballad, more intimate songs, collaborations—each one from a different world. And the process I've enjoyed the most has been, for example, recording the wind instrument sections in the salsa. I had never done that before, I had never worked in this area, and it was wonderful to see that you have an idea in your head and these musicians help you bring it to life," he added.
Listening to him is not only a playful experience but a transformative one, as was that time for him, filled with the fear of saying a final goodbye due to the cancer crisis of one of his loved ones. There were also goodbyes, but also welcomes, which are what he is offering now.
It's well worth accompanying Pablo Alborán and his collaborators on their KMO journey, their zero kilometers—the official ones, the ones on the outside, like his musical beginnings, those first concerts, those first songs, but also the ones on the inside. Those he recounts in songs like "Mis 36," "KM0," and more.
Pablo Alborán 'Breathe'
This son of Málaga's artistic dreams aren't limited to music. For four years, Alborán prepared to venture into acting. His first role was in the second season of Respira, the Spanish series about a group of doctors, starring Najwa Nimri, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Manu Ríos, Blanca Sánchez, and Borja Luna.
The artist talks about his character Jon Balanzategui, a plastic surgeon in the midst of a divorce who explores his sexual preferences.
"It's the second season. I've been given the opportunity to embody this wonderful character who has so many stories and a brutal emotional arc, and I've been able to prepare myself to try and do the best I can," he said. For him, it wasn't just about seeing if he could work as an actor. "You have to let the character possess you. So for that, you have to completely let go. Letting go has been a very healthy exercise. It's been a lot of fun," he stated.
The series is already on Netflix and shows him in a romance with a medical intern, which he must keep secret while finalizing his divorce. "It's very well done, with a lot of respect, and there's more romance than sex," he said, regarding the sex scene he stars in.
However, there was another, more intense one that was cut, and "that was fine," she said, implying that it was more intense and revealing.
