New rumors about “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” have surfaced online. After the confirmation that the Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) will return in the upcoming film, there has been a lot of excitement among the fans who have been wondering how he will return.

The following article contains spoilers of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

The first scene of Palpatine in the upcoming film will be him meeting with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). According to a report by Making Star Wars, the first question the “apprehensive” Supreme Leader will ask Darth Sidious is “what are you?” In reply, the former Emperor will say that he is not a clone and not yet a man.

The comment is significant because in “Star Wars Legends,” which Disney has made non-canon, Palpatine cloned himself multiple times. He did this to be able to transfer his consciousness to one of the clones in case something happens to him, and in this way cheat death.

Palpatine’s comment saying that he is not a clone in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” appears to hint that there are clones of him in the galaxy. The emperor may have said it to confirm to Kylo Ren that he is not meeting a clone, just in case he has met one before.

The Emperor was presumed to be dead after he fell down the second Death Star’s reactor shaft. According to Bespin Bulletin, seeing Darth Sidious alive will be shocking to Kylo Ren. His first reaction will be to dismiss the claim outright because he believes that his grandfather was successful in killing his former master. He will think the dying man is a clone.

The reason why Palpatine didn’t show himself for so long was because he was busy building up his power in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, and staying in the shadows until he has enough power to return. He may have planned for this long before his death.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” has been directed by JJ Abrams. The film will be released on December 20.
