
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Thiago Silva, who works with the Miami-based Blackzilian MMA team, has been arrested in a Florida suburb after an armed standoff with the local police. According to preliminary reports, the UFC fighter was armed with a weapon when he entered the Brazilian jiu-jitsu school of Pablo Popovitch, located on Oakland Park Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., shouting threats.
Silva, fortunately, did not hurt anyone at the facility and left the premises to go to his Oakland Park home. After creating a scene at the jui-jitsu center, authorities were called at 7:45 p.m. to resolve the altercation. They formed a perimeter around his home after Silva locked himself in it and barricaded himself. The Broward Sheriff’s Office has disclosed that a SWAT team responded to the scene while authorities were trying to get contact with Silva.
The authorities were able to arrest Silva at 11:15 p.m. That said, the authorities have not confirmed that Silva was the suspect. FOX Sports reports, citing anonymous sources, that the cause of the altercation was a domestic dispute between Silva and his wife.
The 31-year-old faces two multiple charges; one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one count of resisting officer without violence, and two counts of attempted felony murder according to arrest records published on the Broward County Sheriff's website. He is booked in the Broward Jail.
Since the events that trasnpired last night, the UFC has issued a statement about Silva's arrest. "This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva," the statement read, according to ESPN. "We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time."
