This video warns would-be thieves to be cautious, particularly around people filling up their cars with petrol.

A netizen shared this footage on Reddit, which also circulated on Twitter, after a white truck approached a customer who was standing at a gasoline station.

The van parks next to him, and three men climb out with hoods covering their faces at quite a high speed.

However, the quick-thinking customer hurriedly mops them up to keep them clean.

Although two people are trying to escape, the car owner fought back and hosed one of them with petrol.

The van pulled away as the three masked men desperately try to get away with the crime.

The would-be robbers managed to escape from the scene, making a fast getaway while the victim continued to shoot them with petrol.

Netizens assume that a Reddit user took the video with a CCTV camera in Chile.

It's unclear what happened after the recording stopped.

Many Redditors commented on the video, captioned: "The hunters become the hunted - guy fends off robbers at the gas pump... with gas."

Netizens lauded the car driver for what he did. They said what the motorist did was a form of self-expression to those who stole.

Another noted that spraying the van with gasoline would help the authorities locate it.

"Thieves: let's Rob this old chap. Old chap: You guys need a shower," one wrote.

"This happens when you use your brain at 100%," another Redditor said.

"I just love watching this. That's what they get!," the third one said.

But other netizens, including one who works at a gas station, cautioned that doing such an act in a gas station is extremely risky.

"The gas soaked clothes are also very dangerous," the gas station worker added.

Another asked how the guy got home safely. He also suggested not starting his car if he encountered the same scenario. The netizen added that the victims and their cars need a good washing now.

Meanwhile, authorities apprehended a blundering car thief after a BMW owner witnessed the crime from his bedroom window and used his remote key to capture him.

The deadlock mechanism, which prevents the vehicle from being unlocked using the door handles inside, thwarted the thief after the driver has locked the car.

The slump in demand for oil due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, combined with the failure of oil-producing countries to slow production has resulted in the price of crude oil crashing, with US oil trading briefly at minus $37 a barrel yesterday.
