San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers were led to the gruesome discovery of a severely wounded mother in a bathtub and soaked in her own blood, after her children were found wandering East Side streets looking for help early Tuesday morning.

According to the SAPD, a cop driving on East Houston Street bumped into the three children, ages 8, 5, and 4, walking without a guardian at around 3:30 a.m. in the morning, according to Express-News.

When the officer asked why they were out alone so late, they reportedly said "mommy's dead and we're looking for daddy's house," and noted that "there's blood everywhere" at their home.

The kids then led the officer to their unit at Antioch Village Apartments in the 1500 block of Upland Road before 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

Responding officers found blood in every room of the home and spotted a bloodied woman, 31, bleeding heavily in the bathtub with multiple deep puncture wounds to her abdomen and legs.

EMS workers administered life-saving measures on the woman for severe blood loss and rushed her to the nearby Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment.

She's in serious condition but is expected to recover, according to police.

Officers at the scene said they are questioning an individual in connection with the stabbing, noting that the 31-year-old mother has been dodging questions about the incident. Authorities have also moved to withhold the woman's identity as it remains unknown if the stab injuries were self-inflicted or if she was a victim of a violent crime.

According to police, witnesses claimed that the woman's boyfriend had been at the apartment at some point during the evening. They are now working to track him down for questioning, News4 San Antonio reported.

The children’s father, Donte Moore, who identified himself as a family friend, was seen rushing to the crime scene several hours later. He told police that he had received about a dozen missed calls from people who were trying to inform him of the troubles concerning his former partner.

“Once I answered my phone, I finally found out that something happened. I rushed over here. But that’s all I got,” he told KSAT12.

Moore told the cops that he noticed some items, including a broken chair and clothing, seemed to have been thrown from the unit in anger, suspecting a fight might have triggered the appalling stabbing incident.

“All this is messed up. I really don’t know what’s going on. I’m going to find out because this is uncalled for," he added.

Meanwhile, his children have since been placed under the care of their grandmother as investigations continue.
