As the biggest night for Broadway approaches, Andrew Rannells and Tony winner Nikki M. James announced the much-anticipated nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda dominated in the categories, with the smash hit musical “Hamilton” earning record-breaking 16 nominations.

This came as no surprise as Miranda’s year has been nothing short of spectacular. Four of the play’s nominations are exclusively for him for Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Book and Best Score. There were also some duplicate nominations within categories, such as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Christopher Jackson.

Following the pleasant surprises came “Shuffle Along,” George C. Wolfe’s retelling of black theater history, with 10 nominations, followed by “She Loves Me” with eight, “Long Day's Journey Into Night” with seven, and “Eclipsed,” the harrowing story of the effect of the Liberian civil war on women hostages, with six nods. This includes Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o’s nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.

Fans were absolutely shocked to see stars such as Ana Villafañe, Jennifer Hudson and Audra McDonald get snubbed during these nominations. It is safe to say it is not a good year (Tony-wise) for Hollywood, as even titans like Al Pacino were left out.

The 2016 Tony Awards will be broadcast Live on CBS, Sunday, June 12, hosted by Tony winner James Corden.
