The Chilean government estimates that more than 20,000 children were stolen from families during the Pinochet dictatorship

The new adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel will also celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the publication of the first edition.

During the 16 years of Pinochet's reign, 1,100 people were officially registered as "forcibly disappeared." Only 104 bodies were ever found, although local communities put this figure much higher.

The announcement came a day after the 50th anniversary of the US-backed coup in Chile that marked the beginning of Pinochet's long and repressive dictatorship.

Leftist President Gabriel Boric joined the procession of some 5,000 people, according to the government -- becoming the first leader of Chile since the end of the dictatorship in 1990 to do so.

Two commissions created to study the dictatorship concluded that at least 38,254 people were tortured under the Pinochet regime, which lasted until 1990.

Augusto Pinochet presided until 1990 over a period of economic prosperity, but also great cruelty. More than 3,200 people were killed or "disappeared" -- abducted and presumed killed -- by his security forces, and about 38,000 were tortured.

September 11, marks the anniversary of the coup d'etat in Chile that ushered in a 17-year dictatorship under Pinochet. More than 3,000 people died or disappeared because of political violence during Pinochet's 1973-1990 military rule.
