Undocumented immigrants

House Republican Leaders presented their immigration reform principles Thursday. Read the full outline of their highly-anticipated list of demands.

Sen. Jeff Sessions has sent a rebuttal to his fellow party members in the House, saying Republicans “should reply to the president's immigration campaign with a simple message: Our focus is to help unemployed Americans get back to work, not to grant amnesty or to answer the whims of immigration activists and CEOs."

The third-ranking Republican in the House says he thinks undocumented immigrants should get legal status but no special pathway to citizenship, days before the House GOP is expected to release an outline of what they want to see in immigration reform.

Illinois passed legislation in 2013 giving undocumented immigrants the right to get driver's licenses. Some 1,200 applicants have gotten them since the law took effect in December.

No legislation has as yet been released by House Republicans. But a preliminary analysis by a non-partisan public policy group says up to 6.5 million undocumented immigrants could get legal status -- and of them, up to 4.1 million could be eligible for green cards and eventually citizenship.

Gov. Christie had earlier said he wouldn't sign a tuition-equality bill authored by Democratic lawmakers in the state, pointing to a handful of parts he didn't support.
