In his speech, Trump recounted an imagined story about a young woman preparing to race who noticed "this giant standing next to her" — a transgender competitor. "When the race was started, he blew by her so fast that she suffered massive wind burn," Trump quipped, pausing for laughter and applause.
"And he got out of the race, went and had a little lunch, and he came back and watched the rest of the young ladies finish up," he continued. "The whole thing is crazy."
Online users responded to video of the bit, criticizing both Trump's "reprehensible" words and the reaction of the faith leaders in attendance.
Not only is it mean, but it's not even funny. Why is everyone laughing? So mean-spirited.

"And those chuckling 'faith leaders' are wondering why their churches are empty," a Bluesky user wrote. "Not much godliness left there."
"This is hypocrisy at its finest," another commented, with one pointing to Trump's appearance, writing, "Says a man in that much makeup."
"Fine man of God right there folks. Such lovely people in the 'Faith' office laughing. Making MAGA so proud," read one sarcastic comment, with another calling the president "repulsive."
Other users noted the joke disparaged women's athletic ability, in addition to demeaning transgender individuals.
"A comment to target trans youth AND to tear down women as inferior," one said. "Two birds, one stone." Another wrote the joke signaled "the absolute belief in the all-around inferiority of cis women, in addition to the bigotry against transwomen."
Trump has made the rollback of transgender rights a target of his second term, signing executive orders to "end transgender lunacy," ban trans women from women's sports, and cut off federal funding for gender-affirming care.
While Trump's joke was well-received by the crowd, he did manage to shock some attendees at another point in his speech. Trump acknowledged his legal challenges. "I got indicted five times, impeached two times. All bullsh--," he said, eliciting grumbles from the religious crowd.
The White House has not commented on the remarks, nor have faith leaders present at the luncheon.
