To this day, there are still people who believe that Princess Diana was pregnant when she was killed in the infamous fatal car crash of 1997. Is there any truth to this claim?

Royal followers are convinced that Princess Diana was ready to take the next step in her relationship with then-boyfriend Dodi Fayed when they both died. In fact, Dodi's father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, said that Princess Diana and his son were about to get engaged. He was first to claim that the British establishment may have known about the plan, as well as the supposed pregnancy, and thus arranged to kill them. The senior Fayed spent millions on private investigations to prove this.

However, forensic scientist Angela Gallop begs to differ, at least regarding the pregnancy. In her book “When The Dogs Don’t Bark: A Forensic Scientist’s Search For The Truth,” she explained why there was no way the former Princess of Wales could have been carrying a child.

No traces of the pregnancy hormone called hCG was found in her blood samples, which were taken from the carpet in the footwell of her seat in the Mercedes car. The absence of said hormone also indicated that she hasn't been taking any contraceptive pills.

Conspiracy theorists, however, assert that the result can't be accurate. They argue that Princess Diana received blood transfusions, so the blood sample would've tainted the finding. They also think that the immediate embalming didn't help. The French police apparently rushed it to avoid any opportunity for a urine or pregnancy test.

The simple explanation for this is that there was just no reason to postpone it. There was no question that her injuries weren't consistent with the cause of death. In addition, a pregnancy test isn't usually part of such procedure anyway.

“In the end, the results of all the tests were negative. Which meant it was extremely likely that Diana was not pregnant at the time of her death, and that she had not been taking contraceptive pills,” Gallop wrote.

In her interview with Mirror before her fated death, Princess Diana did tease “a big surprise” upon her return to the country from France. “You'll see. You are going to get a big surprise with the next thing I do,” she added.

Many were quick to conclude that this may have something to do with a baby on the way. In the same candid interview, she talked about how young Prince William and Prince Harry advised her to leave the country to get away from the attention and “preserve her sanity.” “They say it is the only way,” she said at the time.
