The US Justice Department accused on Thursday an army doctor and her spouse, a Johns Hopkins anesthesiologist, of allegedly conspiring to provide medical information of US soldiers and their relatives to the Russian government.

The accused are Jamie Lee Henry, an army major at Fort Bragg, and Anna Gabrielian who is a Russian-speaker affiliated with Johns Hopkins. Both of them were charged for granting sensitive and private information to an FBI agent posing as a Russian embassy representative.

According to the indictment, as reported by NBC News, the FBI discovered that Gabrielian volunteered to assist Russians through the Washington embassy.

On Aug. 17, in a hotel room meeting in Baltimore, she allegedly told the undercover FBI agent that she was "motivated by patriotism toward Russia to provide any assistance she could to Russia, even if it meant being fired or going to jail."

Gabrielian said that she reached out to the Russian Embassy through email and phone and offered her assistance to the Russian government including her spouse, Henry, NBC News reported.

On the same date, Henry mentioned their assistance to Russia to the FBI agent and said that he has already looked into volunteering to join the Russian army. In addition, the indictment also said that Henry uttered, “The way I am viewing what is going on in Ukraine now, is that the United States is using Ukrainians as a proxy for their own hatred toward Russia.”

Gabrielian and Henry have been charged, although it is unclear if they already have lawyers.

They might face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for conspiracy and a maximum of 10 years in federal prison for every health information disclosed.

Although the indictment refers to Henry as male, in 2015, she came out as first openly transgender army officer. However, according to Marcia Murphy, the spokesperson of the US attorney’s office in Baltimore, Henry now refers to himself as a male in several interactions with the FBI agent.

Johns Hopkins Medicine in a statement through a spokesperson expressed their shock at the incident. "We were shocked to learn about this news this morning and intend to fully cooperate with investigators."
