Queen Elizabeth is so far the longest reigning monarch in the history of the British royal family. At 92, many people can’t help but think that Her Majesty may pass away in the near future, leaving her husband of more than seven decades, Prince Philip. If Prince Philip outlives the Queen, what will happen to him?

Although Prince Philip is older than Queen Elizabeth by five years, it is not impossible for the Queen to die before him. If that happens, Prince Philip will be all by himself since all their children already have families of their own. According to royalist and monarchist Sallie Smythe, the Duke of Edinburgh may end up staying at the Windsor Castle or Sandringham instead of Balmoral because while he loves staying in Balmoral, its location is too far from his children.

Smythe also believes that Prince Philip may stay with Princess Anne, his only daughter, after Queen Elizabeth’s death. “Another possibility might be that he chooses to live with Princess Anne, his only daughter to whom he is devoted,” she said. “She was the only royal to visit him during his recent stay in the hospital,” she added.

When it comes to his rank, royal historian Marlene Koeing revealed that Prince Philip would remain as the Duke of Edinburgh after Queen Elizabeth’s death. He currently sits before Prince Charles. However, as he succeeds Queen Elizabeth, he will need to decide if his father will sit before Prince William. “We won’t know this until Charles is king,” she said.

Koeing also added that the death of Queen Elizabeth will not make Prince Philip the King Father, unlike Queen Elizabeth I, who became the Queen Mother when she became a widow. “He would not be titled the King Father as he is not king,” Koeing explained.

While Prince Philip will never have the title King Father when he becomes a widower, Chris Smith said his life might be similar to the Queen Mother after King George VI died. That means he might stay at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate since this is where he chose to reside after his retirement. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother resided in Clarence after King George VI’s death, the same place where she stayed after she retired from her royal duties.
