Queen Elizabeth made an unusual effort to forge a close relationship with Meghan Markle due to a heartbreaking reason. A royal expert recently said that Her Majesty didn’t want the Duchess of Sussex to feel what Princess Diana must have felt when she joined the royal family.

While speaking with The Sun, Duncan Larcombe said that the Queen decided to go on a solo outing with Meghan shortly after she wed Prince Harry. To note, this same privilege wasn’t afforded to Kate Middleton immediately after her wedding to Prince William.

According to Larcome, there have been a handful of times wherein the monarch personally requested for Meghan to join her on her royal engagements. The royal expert said that this was probably the Queen’s way of indirectly telling the entire world that she was welcoming the “Suits” alum into the family.

“Possibly because Meghan very much burst onto the scene in a way Kate obviously didn’t,” Larcombe explained. “Everyone got to know Kate and the family long before they got engaged. Also, possibly because of the lessons of the past where Princess Diana pretty much felt like an outsider in the royal family.”

The Princess of Wales joined the royal family in 1981 after marrying Prince Charles. But according to her former private secretary, Patrick Jephson, the mom of two felt alienated from her ex-husband’s family, especially after their divorce. While speaking on Yahoo’s “The Royal Box,” Jepson said that Princess Diana also felt like an outsider in her own home when she was still young.

Meanwhile, following Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ separation, the mom of two received a letter from Queen Elizabeth II advising her to divorce her eldest son. Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former royal butler, revealed that the Queen consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the prime minister and Prince Charles on what to do about their marriage.

After Princess Diana received the letter, Burrell said that the late royal wasn’t at all happy. This was because she found the note to be rich as other people who weren’t involved in their marriage got to decide what she and Prince Charles should do.
