Meghan Markle is being criticized by the media for every single thing that she’s doing. Most recently, Meghan was slammed for guest editing the September issue of British Vogue.

But a royal author recently said that there’s something that Meghan can do to help her avoid public scrutiny and backlash. While speaking with Sky News, Harry Mount said that Meghan should learn a key lesson from Queen Elizabeth II.

“I think she should follow the example of her grandmother-in-law and stick to public speeches, to charity work,” he said. “She is extremely good at that, I’m an admirer of hers, but she must be very careful about airing her thoughts too much.”

The great 19th-century constitutional journalist Walter Bagehot has this to say about the monarchy: “its mystery is its life, don’t let daylight in upon magic — if you hear too much about what she thinks, she loses her mystery.”

Mount went on to say that Her Majesty has never given an interview even though she’s been the reigning monarch for 67 years. And as such, the public doesn’t really know what she thinks about a number of things, so she gets that grandeur and that mystery.

The author added that Meghan should pour her efforts on promoting the causes that are close to her heart instead of collaborating with prominent magazines. For the September issue of British Vogue, the “Suits” alum interviewed 15 trailblazers, including former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Mount also said that he’s a fan of Meghan, and he also liked her speech for the United Nations. But he thinks that it’s strange for Prince Harry’s wife to be accelerated to the role of guest editor for a magazine just like that.

Nonetheless, Meghan is not the first member of the royal family to guest edit for a magazine. But since day one, Meghan has been criticized for things that other royals are celebrated for, royal contributor Omid Scobie noted.

According to BuzzFeed News, those who have criticized Meghan have denied that their negative take on her guest-edited piece had anything to do with her race. To note, Meghan is an African American woman who has no royal blood.
