A woman has been arrested after she allegedly abandoned the corpse of her newborn baby boy in a trash container on the premises of a resort hotel in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

Thirty-one-year-old Momoko Yamada, a resident of Kyoto, was reportedly staying at the Yukai Resort Nanki Shirahamaonsen Shirahama Saichoraku in the Wakayama Region of Japan on Sept. 10 when she gave birth in her hotel room at around 4 p.m.

After she gave birth, she allegedly abandoned the body of her newborn baby boy in a large trash container near the first-floor entrance of the resort, Japan Today reported. It remains unclear if the infant was a stillbirth or died after being left in the garbage.

After abandoning the baby's body, Yamada checked out of the resort later that night and went to a hospital in Wakayama Prefecture.

The incident came to light after the infant, who was naked and wrapped in a towel, was found by a resort employee at around 8:30 p.m. on Sept 10 in a large trash container near the first-floor entrance of the resort. The employee immediately alerted the authorities about the incident. When the officers reached the scene, the infant was already dead.

Following the gruesome discovery, the officers checked the hotel guest registry and analyzed security camera footage to zero in on Yamada as the suspect. After Yamada left the hospital, the authorities detained her for questioning on suspicion of abandoning a corpse on Wednesday, Sept. 14. While being interrogated, Yamada admitted to dumping the baby's body in the trash can after giving birth in the hotel room.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a woman was arrested after she allegedly abandoned the body of her newborn baby boy in a toilet and flushed it in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan on Thursday, Sept. 1, Latin Times reported.

The unnamed suspect, a 31-year-old woman who reported hails from the Philippines, allegedly gave birth to her infant on a toilet at her apartment between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. After giving birth to the baby, she then flushed the toilet with her newborn baby's remains in the bowl.

The next day, on Friday, Sept. 2, a relative who was living with the woman in the apartment noticed that the toilet wasn't flushing properly. The relative then called the building maintenance office to repair the toilet and fix the issue. When the repairman checked the problem, he found the remains of the infant blocking the toilet.

Following the gruesome discovery, officers in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, were alerted. The officers responded to the scene and arrested the 31-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning a corpse.
