Every year, more than 900 chefs and culinary experts vote for their seven favorite restaurants for the year to name the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna and Lavazza sponsored the coveted award for Best Restaurant of 2016, which went to chef Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy. “I have to thank my wife, family and my team who are watching in the restaurant. I want to thank everyone, it’s been so hard, our job is all about hard work...I think the most important ingredient for the future is culture, because culture brings knowledge and knowledge brings consciousness. I feel like I will cry,” Bottura said.

The chef is well-known for altruist activities in his hometown and all over the world; in fact he took the chance to announce the opening of a soup kitchen project in Brazil in the next few months. Bottura’s eatery dethroned last year's winner El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, which went to second place this year.

Latin American eateries got one less spot in the list, going from nine to eight. The honorees include Peruvian eatery in Lima, Central, holding its no. 4 spot, and named Best Restaurant in South America for its position in the list. Next is the return of Brazilian restaurant D.O.M despite losing a little steam once again, from spot no. 9 to no. 11.

Mexico City’s Quintonil made an amazing rise from no. 35 to no. 12, but Peru’s Maido earned the Highest Climber Award for rising from no.44 to no.13.

Enrique Olvera’s Pujol made a bit of a stumble down from last year’s no.16 spot to no. 25, but he is still standing strong and his New York eatery Cosme made the 100 Best Restaurant’s list occupying no. 96.

Lima’s Astrid and Gaston stood strong at no. 30 and Brazil’s Maní, as well as Chile’s Boragó and Mexico City’s Biko who are at 36 and 43 respectively.
