A 14-year-old girl faces first and second-degree murder charges for fatally stabbing her grandmother in Canton Town, Michigan, last week. While the teen’s identity remains undisclosed as she’s a minor, formal charges were filed against her on Saturday as reported on PEOPLE.

“The fatal stabbing of Ms. Mosby is very sad and disturbing,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “Ms. Mosby was a nurse who was raising her granddaughter. Our prayers go out to her son and family,” added Worthy.

The victim, 65-year-old Cynthia Mosby, was discovered lying face down in a pool of blood on a bedroom floor of her residence on Monday. Her son alerted cops about the crime right away. It is believed that the teen fled the scene and checked into a motel in Southgate soon after she committed the crime. She was nabbed by cops later in the afternoon on Monday.

Not much has been divulged about her mental health history nor has it been clearly established as to whether she’s gotten hold of a defense attorney. But, credible reports cite that the teen's mental health will be evaluated as the case moves forward.

The heinous crime calls for the girl being adult designated inferred the prosecutor. “In this case, the 14-year-old girl is being adult designated because upon conviction it gives the judge the most flexibility during sentencing to provide options for rehabilitation of this very troubled youth,” she added.
