A 16-year-old boy allegedly killed himself by jumping in front of a speeding train after his parents berated him over his cell phone addiction, authorities said.

The shocking incident happened Tuesday, July 26, in the Munnerpallam area of Tirunelveli in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The unidentified victim was an 11th grader at an aided school at Palayamkottai, according to local media reports.

Police say the boy died instantly after being hit by the speeding train. A preliminary investigation revealed the boy was upset because his parents scolded him for spending too much time on his cell phone rather than on his studies.

It is unclear if a suicide note has been recovered by the investigators. The body was sent to a medical examiner’s office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.

“Prima facia it appears to be a case of suicide and the viscera has been preserved,” a police official said.

The incident came to light after the loco pilot of a train, which passed on the adjacent tracks a few minutes later, spotted the mutilated body lying near the tracks.

In another shocking case of suicide, a 17-year-old girl hanged herself to death at her residence in the Sivakasi area of the state on Tuesday.

The victim’s parents, both daily wage laborers at a firecracker factory, were at work when the teen took the extreme step, reports said.

The exact circumstances that forced the teen student to take the drastic step remain unclear.

However, when the investigators questioned the victim’s parents they claimed the teen killed herself due to unbearable menstrual pain.

“Her parents told us that she suffered severe menstrual pain which may have led her to take the extreme step… But that’s the parents’ version,” Virudhunagar superintendent of police (SP) M Manohar told Hindustan Times.

A case of unnatural death has been registered and a further probe is underway, the officer added.
