Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull clinches pole for the second week in a row at the weekend's highly anticipated Malaysian Grand Prix. While good tire choices allowed Red Bull to dominate with a Vettel-Webber 1-2 qualification at Australia, poor tire selection almost cost Vettel the whole weekend after nearly dropping out of the first qualifying session.
With a better understanding of track conditions by Q3, Seb dived back into the garage to have Red Bull fit a second set of Pirelli intermediates before clocking a 1 minute 49.674 seconds, enough to knock Fernando Alonso and his Ferrari off the top spot on the grid.
Sebastian Vettel wasn't the only one that managed to outpace Alonso. Remarkably, a late hot lap by teammate Felipe Massa was enough for the Brazilian to take the second and final spot at the front row of the grid.
Fernando Alonso will start third ahead of Lewis Hamilton at fourth. Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button, Adrian Sutil and Sergio Perez round out the top 10 drivers at Malaysia.
As usual, qualifying performance at Malaysia is no indication of race results. Winner at Australia Kimi Raikkonen admitted that the warmer and more humid climate at Malaysia will significantly change the characteristics of the Pirelli tires. Drivers starting from 11 and down will benefit from a fresh set of Pirellis, opening an opportunity for a strong pace in the opening laps.
