4 Times Princess Diana Was Enraged By Prince Charles

Dubbed as the wedding of the century, 750 million watched as Prince Charles married Princess Diana in what was perhaps the grandest wedding in TV history. Unfortunately, their union didn’t last, and the pair separated a decade after.

A lot may have contributed to the failure of the royal couple’s marriage. But perhaps one factor is Charles’ indifference toward Diana, causing her to go a fit of rage at times. Here are some of the moments when Charles’ actions caused Diana to seethe with anger.

1. Charles Joked About Having Two Wives

Unless one is in a polygamous relationship, any wife would probably be offended if her husband starts joking about wanting two wives. But that’s exactly what Prince Charles did, not only once but thrice.

The royal couple once visited Brecon, Wales, and greeted the crowds who met them, one on each side of the street. “I’ve come to the conclusion that really it would have been far easier to have had two wives to cover both sides of the street. And I could have walked down the middle directing the operation,” Prince Charles later joked, according to Brecon mayor Gwanwyn Evans.

However, Princess Diana wasn’t amused. He later repeated the same joke in 1983, when he visited New Zealand, and 1992, when he went to South Korea.

2. He’d Rather Paint And Read Than Talk

Going on a honeymoon, especially one that involves a Mediterranean cruise onboard the royal yacht, is probably the most enjoyable experience any newlywed could have. But for Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the result was disastrous, which highlights just how incompatible the two were.

“The prince envisaged a wonderful holiday in the sun, swimming, reading, painting, and writing thank you letters,” Penny Junor wrote on “The Duchess: The Untold Story.” He had taken his watercolors and some canvases and a pile of books by Lauren van de Post, which he hoped they might share and discuss in the evenings.

What Prince Charles didn’t realize is that Diana neither fancied books nor paintings, and she was particularly upset since her new husband spent so much time on these passions, time that he could have spent with her.

“One day, when he was sitting painting on the veranda deck, he went off to look at something for half an hour,” wrote Junor. “He came back to find she had destroyed the whole lot. He had no idea what was wrong.”

3. Charles Wore Something Given By Camilla On Their Honeymoon

The destruction of Prince Charles’ paintings was just collateral damage. Apparently, there was something else that Princess Diana was really upset about during their honeymoon.

“On our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists,” the Princess of Wales revealed in a tape recording. “Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’ … So I said ‘Camilla gave you those didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.’ And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy.”

4. Diana Found Out He Also Gave Something To Camilla Before Their Wedding

According to royal author Penny Junor on her biography on Camilla, Princess Diana became increasingly suspicious that something deeper is going on between Prince Charles and his former flame despite his reassurance that they’re “nothing more than friends.”

Prince Charles somehow made matters worse when Diana discovered that Charles had ordered a bracelet for Camilla shortly before his wedding to Diana. “He didn’t try to imagine how an insecure 19-year-old might feel about him giving a bracelet to the one old girlfriend she was fretting about,” Junor explained.
