The newborn, Messiah is now in critical condition after his mother, 31-year-old Kyla O'Neal, was allegedly shot and killed by an Amazon employee in Minnesota on Jan. 8. Messiah was delivered just before his due date.

The suspected shooter was swiftly recognized by authorities as 32-year-old Donte Raphael McCray, a worker at the Amazon fulfillment center in Lakeville, a suburb of Minneapolis,. He is said to be the father of the newborn baby. Reports say Kyla apparently ended her relationship with McCray shortly before her death.

According to a press release from the Lakeville Police Department, the mother was discovered suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle in the parking area of the Amazon facility just before 7 p.m. local time. Authorities said she later passed away after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors were able to deliver her baby.

In addition, Kyla O'Neal leaves behind three other children, ages 10, 7, and 2, according to the GoFundMe account created to assist her children and pay for funeral costs.

Kyla’s family, who had seen the two on the day of her death, was questioned by police. One of Kyla’s children allegedly reported to Kyla’s mother that McCray was acting "aggressively" toward Kyla, when she was called to the couple's house.

Before departing for his mother's house, McCray allegedly threatened Kyla’s mother, her daughter, and family by saying, "You all ain't bulletproof." Kyla claims that McCray threatened to murder her if she brought another guy near his children.

"I need him to pull through this," Kyla’s mom, Katina O’Neal, told CBS News, referring to Messiah. "I want him to. I can’t lose both of them, not right now, no."

"She didn’t deserve what happened to her. She had a promising future," Katina said.

Messiah eventually had a pulse, although his condition is still regarded as critical. McCray will be charged further if he doesn't make it, according to the prosecution.

McCray, of Minneapolis, is being held at the Dakota County Jail on a charge of second-degree homicide, the department said. It is unclear at this time whether he entered a plea or hired a lawyer who could represent him. The bail set for McCray is $2 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 19.
