The defeat of the Netherlands to Argentina in the semifinal round of the World Cup generated a lot of grief in the players and fans of the team, as well as the families of those selected. After being eliminated in the semifinal, the cameras caught the moment that the Dutch player Arjen Robben walked across Sao Paulo Arena to where his son was crying, devastated by the defeat of the 'Clockwork Oranje.' The photo was then picked up by the Twittersphere and went viral.

Holland was a step forward to on the Argentines until the end, however, during the 90 minutes of regulation time and the 30 additional extra time minutes, no goal was scored despite repeated attempts, mainly at the end of the second half and all overtime. The game ended in a penalty shoot-out, where the Dutch fate was sealed when Ron Vlaar failed to make his penalty chance. Now the orange squad this will play for third place against Brazil, who were beaten by Germany 7-1.

Though scoreless, the Netherlands-Argentina semifinal was tense as two of the strongest defensive teams faced off against each other. In a surprise turn, both Robin Van Persie who was expected to be out of this game with a stomach flu, and Nigel de Jong, who had been expected to be out for the remainder of the World Cup with a torn groin, were in the starting lineup for the Netherlands. The Dutch managed to shut down Lionel Messi, however, they could not stop his game-sealing penalty.
