President Donald Trump took aim at Texas state Rep. James Talarico ahead of the state's elections for the U.S. Senate, calling him "grossly incompetent."
Speaking on Fox News, Trump said Talarico is "wacked out" and claimed that Republicans really wanted to run against him because they had these things and nobody knew they had them," potentially related to opposition research related to comments about gender. "He is so woke," Trump said.
Talarico, on his end, has criticized the president, including the war in Iran. In an interview this week he questioned the amount of money spent in the conflict instead of investing it at home.
Speaking on CBS News, Talarico said he "saw how military disasters like the Iraq war robbed this nation of young lives, billions of dollars, and our moral standing in the world," adding that he worries "that our current leaders are repeating those same mistakes."
He went on to say he visited a community in Texas that doesn't have running water, any basic sewer infrastructure," and highlighted that "every dollar we spend bombing people in the Middle East is a dollar we're not spending in our communities at home."
Talarico has also taken aim at his two potential opponents in the general election, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. He said saying last week that they are "extraordinarily weak." "Paxton and Cornyn, they're different. Paxton was guilty of illegal corruption. That's why my colleagues and I impeached him in the Texas House. But Cornyn is guilty of legalized corruption. He was the deciding vote on the Big, Ugly, Bill which kicked millions of Texas off their health care, took food out of the mouths of hungry Texas kids all to give tax breaks to his donors," he claimed.
Trump, on his end, avoided to say whether he will endorse John Cornyn or Ken Paxton in the Republican runoff.
