Apple is testing out large screens for its iPhones and iPad tablets, according to officials at the company's suppliers. The tech-giant has asked for smartphone prototypes with screens larger than 4 inches, this new screen design may be attempt to keep up with iPhone's competition and also consumers demands. With the Galaxy S4 and HTC One measuring up at 5 inches and 4.7 inches respectively, buyers are seeking out larger displays. The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is also testing out larger iPad screens, requesting prototypes that measure slightly less than 13 inches diagonally. When compared to the current sizes of Apple's renowned gadgets, this screen size increase would be significant. The current iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen.

And while Apple has not yet confirmed whether or not these new larger display designs will make their way to the market, the company is known for testing different designs then modifying them during technical development. Although the screen testing with suppliers would lead us to believe that Apple is attempting to diversify the size of their gadgets, by offering consumers with multiple different versions of their tablets and smartphones Apple may capture even more consumers. The California based company seems to already be implementing this new sales strategy, Apple altered the iPhone and iPod last year to include large screens, while also introducing the iPad Mini, which is a tablet boasting a scaled down 7.9 inch display.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple's biggest rival is Samsung, who has surpassed Apple in the smartphone market. In the first quarter, Samsung was the leading smartphone maker with 33.1 percent of the market, while Apple trailed in second place with 17.9 percent, according to researcher Strategy Analytics. Samsung seems to have exceeded Apple with their smartphones by providing an "all things to all people" strategy, which allows Samsung to cover "many different product sizes" and "capture as many customers as possible."

Apple's move into larger screens comes with little surprise. We have watched as many of it's competitors have hopped on board the new "phablet" trend, with smartphone displays of 5-inches or larger. "Phablets" are a new breed of device that is a cross between both a smartphone and a tablet.

"In the long run, we will see touch screens in all sizes as the future vision of the technology industry is to offer the same user experience across all screens," said IDC analyst Helen Chiang. "The key is to bring down the cost and introduce compelling applications for large-screen devices."
