Rumors regarding the release date for season two of "Attack on Titan" have run rampant for so long that it is easy to forget a follow-up anime was actually, officially announced for 2016.

According to the Spanish streaming and home video distributor SelectaVisión, the 2016 time frame for the anime is not happening, reports Crunchyroll. SelectaVisión stated that the anime could be released as early as January 2017. This news echoes previous reports that say the anime will miss its 2016 launch.

A Mission Tokyo interview and Facebook comment, Kodansha (series manga publisher and anime production committee member) has also indicated that the series will not be debuting this year.

Meanwhile, there is plenty material to tide us over until the second season arrives, such as video games or Captain Levi's own prequel anime titled, "Attack on Titan: No Regrets."

Furthermore, a few spoilers have come out including one regarding the Reiss family. The spoilers revealed that the Reiss family are royalty and have the same ability as Eren to turn into titans. Also, the political situation in the second season of "Attack on Titan" will be explored more, as the characters uncover a conspiracy that connects the government to the origins of the titans themselves. Certain characters may not be who you think they are and they will be more interesting takeaways about the titans.

Produced by Wit Studio, the adaptation of Hajime Isayama’s bestselling manga concluded its first season on Sept. 29, 2013. The episodes were later compiled for theatrical release as two films: "Attack on Titan – Part 1: Crimson Bow and Arrow" and "Attack on Titan – Part 2: Wings of Freedom." Production I.G. also adapted the comedy spinoff "Attack on Titan: Junior High," which premiered last fall.
