"The Avengers 2" release date and cast rumors that Elizabeth Olsen will be joining the team as the Scarlet Witch have Marvel fans salivating with excitement for the coming "Age of Ultron" sequel to the superhero box office hit. And though the May 1, 2015 release date may have us feeling like "The Avengers 2" will never come out, little tidbits like casting rumors and announcements will have to tide us over for the next two years. And fortunately for us, at least, if ScreenRant's reports are true for the time being, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch cast rumors are much, much more than tidbits -- they're the stuff that Marvel fan dreams are made of. Though we're very excited, there must be some fans out there scratching their heads in confusion.

With "The Avengers 2" release date still being too far away to even think about, let's focus on the new news at hand: who is Elizabeth Olsen, and why is she the perfect choice to play the Scarlet Witch in the "Age of Ultron" sequel? You may not be familiar with Miss Olsen, but chances are you've heard of her sisters -- Mary Kate and Ashley -- whose unprecedented success as child actors all but managed to completely eclipse the rare talents of their younger sister, Elizabeth, who wowed audiences with her superstar turn in Sean Durkin's hotly anticipated indie darling "Martha Marcy May Marlene," wherein Elizabeth Olsen played an escapee from a violent cult attempting to reacclimate to her family and to society. Though her performance received much critical acclaim, it fell just short of garnering her a career-making Oscar nomination. Many film critics consider this a snub, attributing the "error" to her newcomer status.

But "The Avengers 2" release date waits for no one to become a superstar, even if we're wishing we had the Scarlet Witchs' reality-warping powers to make it true. It's less credible a rumor, still when you consider a roster filled with A-List names like Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, and Chris Evans -- and how difficult it would be to market the Sundance It-Girl joining their ranks and rounding out the "Age of Ultron" team as a superhero with little in the way of name recognition amongst people who don't consider themselves Marvel fans. But the Scarlet Witch's angsty past as a former terrorist and Magneto's daughter could prove to be exactly the kind of meaty role with which Elizabeth Olsen will dazzle audiences. And for those of us who are otherwise uninitiated into the world of comics, Scarlet Witch was the center character of a major comicbook crossover event (think about this as the "blockbuster movie" equivalent of the sequential art form world) where she became mentally and emotionally unhinged, causing her to commit genocide with the use of her reality warping powers.

When "The Avengers 2" release date draws nearer and we start to see trailers for the "Age of Ultron" sequel, expect Scarlet Witch's powers to manifest themselves looking something like how Loki's reality-warping powers presented themselves. Even if the cast rumors are wrong and Elizabeth Olsen doesn't end up playing her, we're still stoked to see who will end up playing one of Marvel Comics' first major female characters. What's Tatiana Maslany up to in-between Orphan Black seasons?
