Whether you live by the beach or not, "beach hair" is the go-to look for spring and summer. In fact, the New York Times described the look perfectly: "The beach wave, once a shrugging result of summer weather and activities, has taken on a certain artfulness: stretching year-round, coast to coast, and with surprising staying power." And rightfully so: The look gives off a low-maintenance vibe while looking put together.
"The “beachy waves” hairstyle is very popular because it is easy to do, looks elegant, is so versatile; you can wear it for any occasion!" said celebrity stylist Marcos Carrasquillo, who has worked with a wide array of celebs including Adamari Lopez, Karla Monroig, Carlos Ponce, Daddy Yankee, and others. "You can flaunt beach waves all year round for any event, day or night, but in the summer, paired with your sun kissed glow, the classic beachy waves hairstyle makes you look sexy and beautiful."
And while anyone can try the hair style, there are some shades and cuts that work better with beach waves.
"Beach waves is ideal for those with brown or light brown hair, since these shades make the different waves and textures stand out better," advises Carrasquillo, who is also a brand ambassador for L'Oréal Paris. "Beach waves work best on medium-length to long hair with layers, because hair falls and moves more naturally, and the style lasts longer."
"Remember that the more layers you have, the more movement and less weight your hair will have, so it will become more textured and wavy, giving you a sexy and lively look. This style is ideal for straight or softly curled hair. If your hair is too curly, it'll be more difficult to achieve this style at home, so consider a professional hair stylist for optimal results."
Here is a step-by-step tutorial from Marcos Carrasquillo:
1. Wash your hair with Advanced Haircare Volume Filler Shampoo & Conditioner, which help define and hydrate waves, giving them bounce and shine. This duo containing Filloxane helps to generate a thicker feel and infuse lasting volume for your beach waves.
2. Towel-dry hair to remove approximately 80% of water. Do not rub towel on scalp, as this can activate your curly texture, which tends to happen on very curly hair.
3. Apply Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves. Spray all over your hair, from roots to tips. This product will add texture to your hair, just like seawater does.
4. Turn your head down and use your hands as a diffuser to create waves. Grab hair from the tips and scrunch it against your scalp. Repeat this several times on remaining hair until it's wavy. Then, lift your head.
5. Divide hair into four sections: front-to back and ear-to-ear. Make four braids (very tight) from root to tip. You can braid your hair day or night while it's wet or dry. If hair is wet, just wait for the braids to dry. If it's dry, you must wear the braids for at least 4 hours. When you release the braids, you'll have natural waves. If your hair is already wavy, your waves will be more defined, and will last longer.
6. If your hair is naturally wavy, blow-dry your hair with cool air using a diffuser. If your hair is straight, blow-dry it completely with cool air. Then use a big curling iron (2 to 3 inches). Focus on small sections, and begin from the bottom up, until you get the beach waves. Then use Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray to lock in style for up to 48 hours.
