A biker struck a bear at 87 mph while traveling along Highway 7 near Hope, British Columbia. Footage was recovered from a video camera mounted on the biker's helmet. The incident occurred on June 30.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) , the biker's camera was recovered when he received medical attention. After watching the video footage, RCMP learned that the motorcycle accelerated from 0-to-87 mph in less than 20 seconds. The motorcycle rider was apparently distracted with attempting to record his speed when the bear wandered to the middle of the road.

A train can be seen traveling on the left hand side of the frame when moments later the motorcyclist looks up to see a bear sprinting away from the grass and towards the biker's center periphery, likely spooked by the passing train. Unable to react, the biker slammed into the bear and is catapulted off the bike and thrown onto the pavement. Miraculously, the bear was unharmed. However, the biker suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries from the motorcycle crash with the bear.

Corporal Robert McDonald of E Division Traffic Services spoke during a press conference as an opportunity to warn thrill seekers against traveling at high speeds.

"This is a perfect example. The video clearly shows nobody else on the road, and a nice clear dry day. Who would expect a bear to run across the road?" said McDonald. Authorities cited excessive speeds as the primary factor of the accident. In addition, police also noted that the motorcyclist was distracted with capturing video footage, failing to notice the bear until it was half way across the oncoming lane of traffic.
