The Barclays Premier League has always been a league built on excellence, with individual and club recognition echoing across the wide landscape of international soccer. Thanks to the brilliance of teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, the BPL remains one of the most competitive and entertaining leagues in all of professional soccer. This season in the Premier League is no different as far as the race to the top is concerned. With each of the 20 teams completing five matches apiece, only five points separate the first place team from the current twelfth place team.
Earning four wins and a draw in five outings, the Arsenal Gunners are off to a brilliant start in league competition. Arsene Wenger and his Gunners made it a point to finish better than last season's fourth place finish in the league and with a total of 12 points and a favorable goal differential, the Gunners hold the top honor by a slim margin over Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester City (3-1-1), Chelsea (3-1-1) and Liverpool (3-1-1) round out the tight-knit top five and heading into another big weekend on the pitch, expect to see a heightened level of competition with each match becoming more important than the last.
Kicking off another weekend of Premier League action, Chelsea and Tottenham are set to meet at White Hart Lane for their first meeting of the 2013-2014 season. Chelsea won at Tottenham 4-2 last season with the clubs playing to a 2-2 draw in the year's second meeting and with both teams looking to remain near the top of the standings, expect this match to be tight once again.
"We want to do well against a team that won the European Cup two years ago, won the Europa League that we wanted so much last season," Tottenham coach Andres Villas-Boas said recently. "This is the kind of game that you can measure the kind of challenges you might have. What is happening to us now puts us in a positive mood and we have to collect as many points as possible based on the positive mood we are developing, but it can change very, very quickly."
"At the moment we are on a good run, but there are no clubs on maximum points and this year will be very tight at the top," he continued. "United are struggling for points, but they have played all the top team at the beginning of the season. This will probably become the tightest Premier League in years. It's important for everybody (to win this game). It would be extremely good to build on our positive start, especially against a good team."
