If you’re a Chilean fan you have to be wiping your foreheads as Chile sweated out a tough win against a very stubborn Australian side. The win gets Chile out the gate with three points but Chile should not be too excited about their overall efforts as going into the match they were a heavy favorite, yet they showed a difficult time in managing the game with their traditional ball possession and skill.

Australia on the other hand, showed some very good fight going the full ninety plus minutes toe to toe with Chile. Had it not been for the two early goals in the first twenty minutes, this match could have easily gone either way as Chilean goal keeper Claudio Bravo had to make several key saves to keep the Socceroo’s off the board in both halves.

Australia’s Tim Cahill, one of the best players in the air, scored a very nice header off a cross in the 34th minute to give life to the Australian side.

Chile had goals from Alexi Sanchez in the 11th and Jorge Valdivia in the 14th minute to rattle the Australians and you would have thought it would have been game, set, and match at that point but that seemed to have an opposite effect, as the Australian’s woke up and started to compete literally until the 90th minute. Australia held Chile in check on defence for much of the match, created numerous scoring opportunities from end to end.. Chile finally turned the knife inot the hearts of the Socceroos, when they scored their third goal in extra time in the 93’ to ice the game and win the match 3-1. Chilean Striker and super sub, Jean Beausejour netted the clinching goal.

Next up for Chile is a Spain squad who found themsleves absolutely oblierated by Holland today 5-1. If Chile is able to beat or draw Spain they on June 18th, it could be the end of the defending World Cup Champion's tenure. Austrailia's next match is against the Netherlands who looked absolutely flawless dismantling Spain. It will be another tough match for the Soccoroos and another similiar outcome could spell the end of thier chances to get out of group play.

Tim Cahill has now scored four goals in his last four appearences for Australia showng the heart of a true leader for his country. Alex Sanchez influnced the game with a goal and a assist, becoming the first ever Chilean to accomplish this feat in a World Cup match.
