Democrats are poised to keep slamming President Donald Trump over his intention to accept a plane from Qatar as the Air Force One with a new tactic: flying a banner over his Mar-a-Lago estate.
ABC News reported on Wednesday that the Democratic National committee is set to fly a sky banner reading "Qatar-a-Lago" over the Palm Beach resort on the same day the president pays a visit to the Middle Eastern country.
"Donald Trump is using the presidency to personally enrich himself while he bankrupts working families. His corruption is a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who are struggling to get by and put food on the table," DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a statement provided to the outlet.
"Today, the DNC is highlighting what foreign autocracies around the world already know: Trump has no loyalty to the American people, national security, or the Constitution -- his only allegiance is to his bank account and his billionaire buddies," the message continues.
Trump again defended the decision on Tuesday night, saying the plane "is a gift from a Nation, Qatar, that we have successfully defended for many years."
"It will be used by our Government as a temporary Air Force One, until such time as our new Boeings, which are very late on delivery, arrive. Why should our military, and therefore our taxpayers, be forced to pay hundreds of millions of Dollars when they can get it for FREE from a country that wants to reward us for a job well done," Trump added in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
However, Trump is facing backlash from several loyalists over the matter. Among the latest to voice concern about the possibility is Senator Ted Cruz, who flagged potential issues with national security and warned the plane could be a doorway for espionage.
"I'm not a fan of Qatar," Cruz told CNBC. "I think they have a really disturbing pattern of funding theocratic lunatics who want to murder us, funding Hamas and Hezbollah. And that's a real problem."
Senator Rand Paul also criticized the possibility. Speaking on Fox News' Jesse Watters Primetime, Paul noted that "the Constitution in article 2 talks about how the president can't take emoluments or gifts from foreign leaders."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Tuesday that Democrats are set to pause all political appointees in the Department of Justice over the decision.
