Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel successfully broke up a knife fight in Australia, where a woman stabbed a man in the chest, police and his representatives have confirmed Tuesday.

The Slumdog Millionaire star, who lives in Australia witnessed the fight at a gas station in Adelaide on Monday (Aug. 1).

A couple was reportedly fighting in the street and continued quarreling inside a convenience store, where Patel "acted on his natural instinct" and tried to end the dispute that eventually escalated outside, the actor’s spokesman said.
The 32-year-old man was stabbed in the chest by the 34-year-old woman. The victim was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
The woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. She was denied bail and is due to appear in court Tuesday.

Patel was photographed speaking to authorities at the scene.
"We can confirm that last night, in Adelaide, Dev Patel and his friends witnessed a violent altercation that was already in progress outside of a convenience store," representatives for Patel told BBC News.
"Dev acted on his natural instinct to try and de-escalate the situation and break up the fight. The group was thankfully successful in doing so and they remained on site to ensure that the police and eventually the ambulance arrived."
"There are no heroes in this situation and sadly this specific incident highlights a larger systemic issue of marginalized members of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
"The hope is that the same level of media attention this story is receiving (solely because Dev, as a famous person, was involved) can be a catalyst for lawmakers to be compassionate in determining long-term solutions to help not only the individuals who were involved but the community at large," the statement from Patel's team said.
