U.S. President Donald Trump is allegedly using Camp David to woo Republicans. Political reporters claim that Trump is using Camp David to keep congressional Republicans on his side amid the impeachment debate.

According to Rachael Bade, something is fishy about Trump turning Camp David into a weekend retreat for House Republicans when he has never been a fan of Camp David. “It’s not exactly his style, he would rather go to Mar-a-Lago,” she said.

At the start of the House impeachment inquiry, Mulvaney allegedly pitched to Trump the unusual idea of using the secluded mountainous presidential retreat to woo the GOP lawmakers. Despite Trump’s partiality to gold and elegance, he agreed, knowing it could give him an upper hand in the trial.

Since then, Mulvaney and several top White House officials have been hosting frequent weekend getaways for Republicans at the historic lodge with the intent of buttering them up before they give their impeachment votes. During dinners, Donald Trump reportedly calls in to compliment each of the members personally.

“They’re hiking, making s’mores, shooting skeet,” said Bade. “It’s all an effort to make House Republicans feel like they’re part of Trump’s family,” she added.

Administration officials say that the excursions are funded by the U.S. government. “I’ve worked with a number of Republican presidents over various administrations… and I’ve never, ever been invited to Camp David,” said Rep. Ann Wagner. “It was amazing to go for the short weekend. So historic,” she added.

A number of Trump’s allies have also recently accompanied Republican lawmakers to recent sporting events, including the Ultimate Fighting Championship in New York, the World Series in Washington, and the football match in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The White House has also been regularly inviting GOP senators to have lunch with Trump, where conversations reportedly often veer towards the impeachment.

Trump has for weeks refrained from full-throated attacks against Republicans despite their criticisms. Last week, things took a turn for the worse when pieces of evidence pointed out to Trump being the mastermind behind attempts to pressure Ukraine to investigate former U.S. vice president Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee.
