A drunk man called the police and told the operator that his dog managed to shoot herself in the face.

According to the authorities, 31-year-old Jonathan George, from Ohio, was arrested for shooting his four-year-old pet Boxer named Lula.

George told the 911 operator that he had trained the dog to bring him his gun, and she shot herself in the face whilst doing this.

Lula survived the incident but did lose an eye.

"(He) said his dog shot itself and he trained the dog to bring a gun to him," Norwalk Police Captain Jim Fulton said.

"The dog had the gun in its mouth when it went off accidentally. The officers didn’t believe that story."

Fulton said that following a detailed questioning George eventually admitted to accidentally shooting the dog.

George was charged with three misdemeanors, including handling a firearm while intoxicated, cruelty to animals, and discharging a weapon in a municipality, according to Fox News 8.

"His BAC was 1.7, so that’s a little over twice the legal limit for driving. Shouldn’t be drinking and handling firearms bottom line," Captain Fulton added.

Huron County humane investigator, Daphne Nelson: "I’m not sure why somebody would be intoxicated and playing with a gun."

Despite her emergency surgery, some bullet fragments still remain in Lula's head, Nelson revealed. She added that Lula will likely have to undergo additional procedures in the future.

"She is definitely a fighter. She is definitely a well-socialized dog, she seems to love everybody. She loves attention and if you’re not petting her, she’s fussing," said Amanda Fearing, manager at the Huron County Humane Society.

The Huron County Humane Society paid for Lula's medical care. They managed to raise over $2,000 for her surgeries, her foster parents at the animal shelter told Fox News 8.

In a similar incident, a 35-year-old woman, reportedly an alcohol addict, has been barred from ever keeping an animal after leaving her dog to starve to death in her home.

Katie Louise Oldridge from Hull was allegedly dealing with personal issues and became dependent on alcohol.

The deceased dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier named Frank was left to starve to death at Oldridge’s kitchen floor at Meadowbank Road.

Aside from being disqualified from ever housing an animal that she cannot contest for 10 years, Oldridge was also sentenced to 18-weeks in prison suspended for two years, per reports.

She was also ordered to carry out 12 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and 200 hours of unpaid work in the community.

The judge ordered her to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge of £128.
