Former Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutor Andrew Weissmann has outlined three troubling explanations for the Trump administration's chaotic handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
The controversy reignited in early July after the DOJ released a brief, unsigned memo claiming no Epstein "client list" exists—despite years of speculation and official hints suggesting otherwise.
Weissmann, who served on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team, outlined three plausible scenarios in a recent analysis, according to Politico.
Weissmann's first theory is that Trump and top officials knowingly misled the public about the existence of explosive Epstein evidence for political gain. Second, Weissmann theorizes that there is damaging material implicating Trump, and the government is now covering it up. And third—the most generous reading—is that senior officials truly believed the conspiracy theories they amplified and are only now discovering they were wrong.
Each scenario, Weissmann argues, reflects a serious failure of leadership. Officials have blamed court-ordered sealing for their lack of transparency, but critics, including Weissmann, say that excuse doesn't hold up.
Epstein is deceased, and the DOJ could petition a court to unseal relevant records in the public interest. Instead, the administration has offered no clear timeline, no detailed findings, and no accountability for misleading the public.
