California Governor Gavin Newsom directly refuted President Donald Trump's claim that they spoke on the phone "a day ago."
During an Oval Office press conference on Tuesday, Trump was asked when he last spoke to Governor Newsom. "Mmm... a day ago," Trump said. "Called him up to tell him, 'got to do a better job.' He's doing a bad job. Causing a lot of death and a lot of potential death."

Trump credited federal intervention for preventing what he described as a near-catastrophic situation in Los Angeles, adding, "If we didn't send out the national guard... Los Angeles would be burning right now."
Within hours, Newsom responded publicly via X.
"There was no call. Not even a voicemail," Newsom wrote. "Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn't even know who he's talking to."
The exchange highlights mounting tensions between state and federal leadership amid ongoing demonstrations against immigration enforcement.
Protests broke out in LA last week in response to sweeping ICE raids throughout the city. Over the weekend, demonstrations spread to other cities, with some escalating to violence amid increased use of force by law enforcement.
Trump deployed the National Guard on the ground in LA, along with around 700 marines to protect federal property.
Critics, including Newsom, have accused the White House of exaggerating the scope of violence to justify federal deployments, while the Trump administration has railed against what they describe as an "insurrection."
