Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles had been dating for years, but it was only after one event that they made their relationship public. And in order to make their first official appearance as a couple a success, they sought help from Prince Charles’ former press secretary.

In the book “The Firm,” royal author Penny Junor revealed how the heir to the throne’s household orchestrated the best way for Prince Charles and Camilla’s relationship to be made public. Mark Bolland saw the 50th birthday celebration of Camilla’s sister Annabelle as the perfect opportunity.

Prior to this, Junor said that the paparazzi have been trying to figure out ways to snap photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. After all, releasing them first could generate huge profits. But Prince Charles and Camilla thought that the paparazzi shouldn’t be given the opportunity to share their first photo as a couple to the public.

“Mark made few discreet phone calls suggesting that they might be seen leaving the party together and by mid-afternoon, the pavement outside the Arlington Street entrance to the Ritz Hotel in Piccadilly was thick with photographers,” Junor narrated. “According to one, there were no fewer than 97 sets of photographer’s ladders on the street. It was a long, cold wait but they were richly rewarded. Shortly before midnight, the couple emerged.”

The royal expert said that Prince Charles and Camilla didn’t pose for the cameras. They didn’t also engage in public displays of affection, but the Prince of Wales sweetly guided Camilla around the waist.

“No-one had an exclusive shot, all the papers and television broadcasts carried the story, and it was the perfect way of gauging public opinion — which they found to their relief was surprisingly favorable,” shared Junor. And after the photo of the couple was released, things became much easier for them. Prince Charles and Camilla started hanging out in public more.

But according to Junor, Prince Charles and Camilla wanted to make their relationship public after the former’s divorce. However, Princess Diana suddenly passed away a year later, so they postponed their plan.
