Prince William and Prince Harry have both been granted leniency compared to the other members of the royal family who came before them. In fact, Queen Elizabeth herself allowed her grandsons to prioritize their family over their royal duties.
On the podcast “Images Of Diana,” royal expert Camilla Tominey said that there’s always been a sense that the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex have always wanted to do things on their own. The dad of three, more specifically, has shown resistance from his royal duties.
“I also think it has been sanctioned by the Queen, who, let’s face it, has had three out of four children divorce and very much wants her grandchildren to be happy,” Tominey said. Princess Anne was the first of the Queen and Prince Philip’s four kids to get a divorce from Captain Mark Phillips.
Shortly after, Prince Charles announced his divorce from Princess Diana. In the same year, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s divorce was also finalized. Today, only Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s, marriage has survived.
Meanwhile, even though Prince William has more royal duties at the moment, he’s still able to send his two older kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to school. Despite his busy schedule, he and Kate Middleton stepped out in public on Sept. 8 to accompany their kids to Thomas’s Battersea.

Tominey said that part of the reason why Prince William and Prince Harry wanted to prioritize their respective families is because of Princess Diana. When she was still alive, the Princess of Wales made sure to spend time with her boys no matter how busy she was.
Royal photographer Arthur Edwards also said that Princess Diana’s sons are both very compassionate with their jobs. The photographer has been at a hospital with Prince William and Prince Harry, and he observed how the siblings were around those who are sick.
“Which was Diana — she started it,” he said. “Everybody follows it now. It is because she is part of them. I see this amazing tenderness come across — Diana started it, everybody follows it now,” he added.
