A Ghana woman is in critical condition after her jealous husband poured acid on her face.
The victim, Ofeibea Florence Aryee, is battling for her life at the Accra Regional Hospital after her husband, Papa Nil, bathed her in concentrated acid.
The victim had been living with her family after she was thrown out of their home by her husband.
"I don't know what wrong I have done to him because I don't cheat on him. My husband told me he does not want to stay with me again so he threw my things out," Aryee told Crime Check Ghana.
According to court documents, the suspect went to meet his father-in-law to plead forgiveness. The suspect then followed the victim into a bathroom with the concealed acid. He strangled her before emptying the bottle of acid on her.
"I went to have my bath and he followed up with the acidic substance and poured it on me," the victim told the outlet.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim suffered severe burns on her face and reported having breathing difficulties.
"I was losing my breath but it has improved through the medication doctor gave me. I come from a poor family so paying for my medical bills has been difficult," the victim said.
The suspect was arrested after the police were alerted about the brutal attack.
Papa Nii was sentenced on Monday, May 10, the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, told local media. After visiting the victim at the hospital, Kwarteng spoke to reporters and described the attack as a "grave crime".
"You are in pain but the good news is that he has been arrested," he said.
"The law bites and those who perpetrate atrocities like this should be dealt with accordingly. No matter how somebody might wrong you, there is no cause to attack the person with acid," he added.
The Weija Circuit Court in the Greater Accra Region sentenced Papa Nii to spend 10 years in prison.
The couple has two children. It is not clear where the children were when the attack happened.
