Jamie Lee Curtis attends the Freakier Friday Los Angeles Premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California on July 22, 2025.

Acclaimed American artist Jamie Lee Curtis swept Mexico off its feet, where she presented the sequel to her hit film "Freaky Friday ," in which she co-stars with Lindsay Lohan. However, the Oscar-winning actress shared another exciting piece of news: she confirmed she's joining the cast of Universal Pictures' classic television series "Murder, She Wrote."

In Mexico City, Curtis received gifts, greeted fans at a public event before the premiere, walked the runway, and even sang the film's theme song, which has been titled in Spanish as Otro Viernes de Locos.

The star even said that the best part of the promotional efforts for the film Freakier Friday was the visit to Mexico.

However, few things caused as much excitement during her promotional run as the July 24, 2025, announcement that she would be taking on the iconic role of Jessica Fletcher, the amateur sleuth originally played by the late Angela Lansbury.

The new crime reporter

"Oh, yeah, it's already happening," Curtis said when asked about the project's status. The actress will take on the role of the mystery writer and amateur sleuth who captivated audiences for 12 seasons on CBS, from 1984 to 1996.

Universal Pictures commissioned the feature-length remake, with screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo writing the script. The duo, known for their work on "Orange Is the New Black" and the recent film "Dumb Money," expressed excitement about bringing Jessica Fletcher to the big screen.

"We've written a film version of Murder, She Wrote for Universal, and we're very excited," Schuker Blum revealed in previous interviews. Her writing partner, Angelo, added, "It's with Pascal Pictures, from Pascal and Universal, and we're very excited to bring Jessica Fletcher to the big screen."

The project is being produced by Pascal Pictures, with Amy Pascal producing. Pascal, an Oscar nominee for "The Post" and "Little Women," brings extensive experience in the film industry to the production.

The original series "Murder, She Wrote" followed Jessica Fletcher as she investigated murders in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, and around the world during her book tours. The series ran for 264 episodes and spawned four television movies, with the final film being released in 2003.

Angela Lansbury's portrayal of Jessica Fletcher became one of television's most beloved characters , making the casting choice for the reboot particularly significant. The legendary actress passed away in 2022, and some fans had already noted her reluctance to support reboot projects during her lifetime.

The reboot project represents Universal's commitment to reviving classic television for modern audiences. While the studio expressed great enthusiasm for the script, production timelines and additional casting details remain under wraps.

Curtis's confirmation marks a significant step forward for the highly anticipated project, which has been in development since 2023 following the completion of Blum and Angelo's script.
