Bitter British rivals Manchester United and Liverpool battled in Miami on Monday night in the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup Final from Sun Life Stadium. The match introduced new United coach, Louis van Gaal to the English rivalry that goes back to 1894.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who is rumored to be headed out of Old Trafford was given one last opportunity to shine for the Red Devils and almost scored the game’s first goal at the five-minute mark. Chicharito received a great cross by Midfielder Ashley Young and had a wide open goal, but unfortunately he attempted a sliding kick off of the wrong foot (his left), and the ball popped up into the air instead of into the back of the net. Had he been able to get his right foot on it, he would have buried it for a goal.

The LeBron James owned, Liverpool Reds got on the board first as Raheem Sterling was tackled by Phil Jones in the box and awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute. England veteran, Steven Gerrard who recently announced his retirement from International play, took the shot and found the back of the net.

England’s poster boy, Wayne Rooney scored the equalizer in the 55th minute after a deep cross from outside the box. Rooney tapped it to the right side of the net as Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet charged after him. In less than a minute, Old Trafford took the lead as Juan Mata took a pass from outside the box and buried a beautiful strike into the back of the net. Liverpool gave two much space to the Red Devils and they took advantage quickly.

Chicharito was removed in the 69th minute for Shinji Kagawa, and may have played his last game for the Red Devils. The go-ahead goal scorer, Juan Mata was also removed in favor of Nani.

Lingard put the nail in the coffin in the 88th minute for Manchester United with a great goal between the bodies of two defenders in the center of the box. The goal was a tremendous moment for Lingard who is a highly regard young player and perhaps the future for United, it also meant Manchester United would hoist the cup and defeat their rivals.
