The LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers first met back in 1901 and since that inaugural 28-0 Auburn victory, the two highly regarded programs have played an additional 46 times. LSU leads the all-time series by a slim margin of 26-20-1 with the Bayou Bengals winning the last 2 meetings, but thanks to a renewed sense of confidence and fresh SEC talent, the Auburn Tigers appear headed in the right direction after an abysmal showing a year ago. The task of upending LSU in their home stadium is never easy but with complete balance on both sides of the ball, Auburn might be able to do just that.

Auburn last defeated LSU in 2010 thanks to strong offensive play from current Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. With Auburn claiming the National Title that year as well, a large amount of the credit for that season's success went to offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. Departing Auburn in 2012 to accept the head coaching position at Arkansas State, the 47-year-old is now back with the navy and burnt orange as their head coach. Following a 3-9 campaign, Malzahn has quickly restored the belief to the Alabama school by utilizing his talents on both sides of the ball, guiding his team to wins over Washington State (31-24), Arkansas State (38-9) and Mississippi State (24-20) to begin his first year as head coach.

Set to take on a loaded LSU team that features a strong defensive 11 along with rising quarterback Zach Mettenberger - who threw for 264 yards and 3 scores in LSU's win last week over Kent State - Malzahn knows a complete effort will be needed for his team to take down one of their biggest rivals. Quarterback Nick Marshall will need to continue to improve as well.

"There was a lot of pressure on that young man and the rest of our offense," Malzahn said during a recent interview with Auburn radio. "The way he responded, I really believe that will help him along the way. Matter of fact, this week I've seen a difference in him. I think he's confident. He's more calm. He had a very good practice today, the best Thursday practice he's had, and we'll need that going into a hostile environment."

The quarterback match-up between Marshall and Mettenberger will certainly be interesting since both are tremendous athletes capable of putting a team on their backs. With both teams entering the contest undefeated, a close game between these long-time rivals is certainly in the cards, creating one heck of a Saturday night.
