A man allegedly killed himself after his senior officer demanded sex with his wife in exchange for a transfer in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India on Saturday, April 9.

On Saturday, April 9, Gokul Prasad, a technical lineman by profession, reportedly felt harassed after his boss, junior engineer Nagendra Kumar, asked him to "send his wife [over] for a night" if he wanted to be processed for a transfer. Upset over the indecent proposal, Prasad allegedly poured diesel over himself outside Kumar's office in Lakhimpur and set himself on fire. Even though he was rushed to a hospital for immediate treatment, he was declared dead on Sunday, April 10, NDTV reported.

Before he passed away, Prasad recounted that he decided to mount the dire gesture to spite his boss for abusing his position, specifying that the junior engineer and his aide were to blame for his gruesome death. The man claimed that his senior officer and his aide have been pestering him for weeks. Prasad eventually decided to seek help from the authorities but was not given assistance by the police.

Meanwhile, the victim's wife alleged that the two men have been torturing her husband for the past three years, Hindustan Times reported.

"He went into depression, and started taking medication, but they did not spare him. He was transferred to Aliganj and was facing difficulty in traveling. So he asked for a transfer closer home. They told him, 'get your wife to sleep with us and we will get you transferred'," she said.

She added that when her husband set himself on fire, no one came forward to help him, adding that the junior engineer just stood there and watched him burn to death.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim's wife Rajkumari, a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against Kumar and an unnamed clerk. In her complaint, Rajkumari claimed that the accused and his aide constantly harassed her husband at his workplace. She added that they also demanded a hefty sum of money to process his transfer.

The men face charges under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 504 (intentional insult, provocation) of the Indian Penal Code. The junior engineer and his clerk have reportedly been suspended.
