A man has been accused of brutally strangling his wife to death in their residence after an altercation ensued between them over the food the woman served in Gurugram, India on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The accused, identified as 59-year-old Deepak Khirbat, a retired government employee, has been arrested for suffocating his 58-year-old wife, Poonam Arora, to death following a heated argument between them over a meal in Surya Vihar colony, Gurugram on Wednesday, Aug. 24, NDTV reported.

On Wednesday evening, Aug. 24, the accused called the police claiming that his wife had taken her own life. Following this, a team of police officers were sent to the couple's home in the Surya Vihar colony. When the officers reached the crime scene, they found the victim lying dead on a bed in a room with a saree, a women's garment commonly worn in India, wrapped around her neck.

However, a case was only registered after the daughter of the deceased, Maanyata William, returned to her home village and filed a complaint with the police. In her complaint, William claimed that her mother frequently called her and that they recently chatted about the other tenants who the couple shared their home with. Her mother had allegedly disclosed feeling unsafe around the other tenants, India Today reported.

Apart from Khirbat and Arora, six other individuals also live in different rooms in the house.

Following the complaint filed by William, an FIR (First Information Report) was registered at Sector 9A Police Station on Wednesday evening against the suspected tenants under sections 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC (Indian Penal Code).

The woman's autopsy report later suggested strangulation to be the cause of her death. Several nail scratches on the woman's body were also noted by the report. Following this, officers detained her husband for questioning. During the interrogation, he confessed to killing his wife after an altercation over the food that she had served him.

"The accused husband confessed that he killed his 'mentally ill' wife after an altercation between them over serving food," said Manoj Kumar, SHO (Station House Officer) of Sector 9A Police Station.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, the accused was produced in court and was sent to judicial custody.
