The Manchester United Red Devils are starting to exhibit the form that led them to the Barclays Premier League title a season ago. After a somewhat shaky start under first-year manager David Moyes - who previously served as Everton boss - Man U has earned six wins and three draws in their last nine matches, including a major 1-0 victory over Arsenal, the team currently pacing the competitive Premier League with 25 points. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney have combined for 12 goals in the Premier League while David De Gea remains a strong force between the pipes, setting up the BPL giants for a strong run the rest of the way.
Along with remaining within striking distance of Arsenal in the Premier League, Manchester United is off to a solid start in the UEFA Champions League. Through 4 matches played in the First Phase, Man U has earned 8 points, putting them one point clear of Bayer Leverkusen and three in front of Shakhtar Donetsk in Group A. While the Red Devils appear ready for more consistency down the road in multiple leagues, recent news regarding the health of a key piece certainly won't sit well with the club and fans at the famed Old Trafford.
According to ESPN FC, Man U midfielder Michael Carrick continues to battle an Achilles injury and could be sidelined until Christmas. The 32-year-old has been a major part of Manchester United's recent success and with the Red Devils most likely forced to replace someone who has started all but 2 matches this season, the club will certainly need the high play of van Persie and Rooney to continue. Upset about the injury - which he revealed following Man U's recent win over Arsenal - Carrick hopes he'll be able to recover quickly but knows his team can continue their strong play after a lousy and unexpected start.
"I have been carrying the injury for a few weeks now," the midfielder said to Sky Sports. "I was a bit patched up to play today. I got through it but it doesn't look too good. After a shocking start we are not in a bad position," he continued. "We knew there was a long way to go and there still is. When we are not at the top, because of our recent run in the league people are asking questions and criticizing. In some ways it is fair. In others we take it with a pinch of salt. We have to deal with it from within. A few weeks ago we probably didn't think we would be in this position as quickly. Now we are not in bad shape, although it is still very early."
Manchester United's next match will come on November 24 at Premier League rival Cardiff City. The Red Devils will follow that contest with a Champions League showdown with Bayer Leverkusen at BayArena before traveling to White Hart Lane for a BPL meeting with Tottenham. United's next home match at Old Trafford will come on December 4 against Everton.
