Manchester United's Mason Greenwood, 21, has been released on bail after being charged with attempted rape. He has also been charged with assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behavior.

The footballer was arrested in January amid allegations surrounding photos and videos circulating online. He had been remanded in detention after he appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court Monday, BBC reported. But his lawyers overturned the order after a brief closed-door hearing at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court Wednesday. The footballer, who didn't attend the hearing, has been released from jail after the decision by Judge John Potter, The Sun reported.

A court spokesperson assured bail had been granted with conditions not to contact witnesses, including the complainant, and to reside at an address in Bowdon.

Greenwood's case has been adjourned to Nov. 21, when a pre-trial preparation hearing will take place at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court. He faces three charges of attempting to rape a woman on Oct. 22, 2021, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior between Nov. 1, 2018, and Oct. 15, 2022, and assaulting a person that caused them actual bodily harm between Dec. 12 and 31, 2021. All of these charges relate to the same alleged victim.

Mirror reported that Greenwood remains suspended by Man Utd pending the outcome of the judicial process. The club has previously stated he is being paid his salary, in the range of £75,000 ($83,958.225) a week, during the suspension. He last played on Jan. 22 in a Premier League win against West Ham.

Greenwood is an English professional football player who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United. The 21-year-old joined the club when he was six, playing at the club's development school in Halifax. After progressing through the academy ranks, he joined the Under-18 squad for the 2017-18 season though he was eligible for the Under-16s.

He finished as the top scorer of the U1-8 Premier League North with 17 goals in 21 games. Then, in May 2018, he was named Player of the Tournament as the youth side won the ICGT Trophy in the Netherlands.
