One of the most popular players amongst Manchester United fans and an iconic figure in his native Mexico, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez remains a key figure in professional soccer. Known for his ability to provide instant scoring at times for the Mexican National team while supplying his Premier League club with timely offensive support, the 25-year-old continues to develop into a top-level player. While he's notched 33 goals in 79 career matches with Man U since joining the club in 2010, the star striker is apparently not thrilled with his current role with the Red Devils and as multiple reports indicate, the Mexican superstar could look for a change of scenery if things don't change for the better.
According to ESPN FC, Hernandez - who joined Manchester United in 2010 after spending 4 seasons with Liga MX affiliate Guadalajara - is seeking a significant increase in playing time at Manchester United and even though he'd like to play out the final four years of his contract, the striker is not blind to the fact that more playing time may only be possible with a shift to a new location. Expressing his desire to earn a bigger role recently, Hernandez noted that he'd like to be rewarded for the constant hard work he puts toward becoming better as a player while helping his team grow.
"I am working towards earning a spot as a starter," Hernandez said in a recent interview with Mexican TV station Deportes Telemundo. I know that my performance on the pitch will allow me to achieve that goal someday either here or elsewhere for any other club. I just need to be given more opportunities to showcase what I can do, because all of us want to be able to contribute our part so this team can win championships."
"Football has always been in my blood and I have always loved the sport," he continued. "So all that sort of carried me towards becoming a football player. That time of my life was very complicated for me but, thank God, things turned out well."
Starting in just one Premier League game this season - Man U's loss to West Brom at Old Trafford - Hernandez says he relishes the opportunity to compete for a first-team job and looks forward to internal competition between himself and top-level players in Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
"I just need to be given more opportunities to showcase what I can do," he said. "What better way to compete anywhere in the world than to compete with them. The competition inside the team has always been really healthy. That helps a lot. Everyone wants to earn a starting spot. The training and matches coming up will force us to step up and help the team grow both at an individual and collective level."
